10 Simple DIY Rope Décor Ideas for the Home

Rope décor is a great way to incorporate neutral colors and fun texture in your home. These fantastic DIY decorative rope items will bring a dash of the sea to your everyday life; all you need is a few simple tools and a bit of craftiness.

What better way to refresh your living space than by bringing in plants? Wrap the planters in rope and you get instant cuteness as a bonus!

What you need:

  • Simple plant pots
  • Rope
  • Hot glue gun
  • Lighter (or scissors)

How to make:

  1. Place a dot of glue at the lower back side of the pot (you decide which side will be the ‘back’ side). This is where you’ll begin wrapping the rope.
  1. Coil the rope around the pot, placing small dots of glue at every inch.
    • Cover the planter fully or partially, then melt the end using a lighter. If you use scissors, the rope may disentangle. Finally, fix the rope’s end to the planter.

    Looking for some cheap, beautiful bathroom décor? Don’t throw away the ordinary cardboard boxes – turn them into beautiful baskets to use for storage.

    What you need:

    • Cardboard box
    • Rope
    • Hot glue gun

    How to make:

    1. Cut the flaps off the cardboard box with the scissors.
    2. Wrap the box with the rope, gluing at about every inch or so.
    3. To make the inside of the box pretty as well, whip up a custom size liner using cheap, simple fabric. That’s it!

    What you need:

    • Glass cylinder candle holder
    • Hot glue gun
    • Rope
    • Beach-themed decorative elements (shells, fish, starfish)
    • Lighter (or scissors)

    How to make:

    1. Wrap the rope around the glass cylinder gluing at every inch or so. The rope should cover about one-third from the bottom.
    1. Cut the rope using the scissors and glue the end to the cylinder.
    1. Glue one beach element.

    What you need:

    • Plant pots
    • Rope
    • Scotch tape
    • Screw hook

    How to make:

    1. Cut eight pieces of rope, long enough to have some rope hanging at the bottom and above the pot.
    1. Tie a knot at the end of each of the eight pieces of rope, a few inches from the end. Note: Make them longer than you want them to be when your project is ready, as you can always them shorter later.
    1. Divide the rope strands into groups of two, placing the knots at the center of the bottom of the planter. Turn the planter upside down. Note: if the planter has a hole in the bottom, make sure to cover it using a few layers of duct tape.
    1. Tie a knot into each of the groups of two rope strands, right along the side of the planter.
    1. Fix the ropes to the bottom of the planter with scotch tape.
    1. Tie a knot in between the ropes from two neighboring sets; repeat this procedure all the way around the planter. Fix this level of knots with scotch tape as well.
    1. Create the third level of knots, fixing them with tape. The final level of knots should be about ½’’ below the planter’s top edge.
    1. Turn the planter over, holding all the rope ends in your hand. Tie a knot at the top, making sure that all of the ropes are the same length. Trim off the excess rope.  Remove the scotch tape.
    1. Finally, install the hook screw and hang your new rope décor item!

    What you need:

    • Rope
    • Cork or foam
    • Hot glue gun
    • Scissors

    Note: Each placement should be about 13’’ in diameter.

    How to make:

    1. Cut the cork or foam you will use as a base into circular shapes.
    2. Add a dab of glue in the center of the circle and fix the rope.
    3. Twist the rope around the center, adding glue as you go (at about every inch).
    4. When you reach the outside edge of the circle, cut the end of the rope and fix it with glue.
    5. Trim away the excess cork or foam visible from under the rope.

    What you need:

    • Picture frames
    • Rope
    • Tape
    • Metal screws, anchors, and cleats
    • Big screw-in hooks
    • Scissors

    How to make:

    1. Screw the hooks on the back of the frame. The positioning will depend on how far apart you want the ropes to be.
    1. Cut the rope (the rope’s length also depends on personal preference). Tape the ends so the rope doesn’t unravel. Tie the ends in knots, then work the hooks through the knots, taking care that each knot is on the underside of the hook so it is not visible from under the frame.
    1. Install the cleats on the wall with anchors and screws. Tie the rope on them. Place two knots on the outer frames and another one in the middle of the rope.

    What you need:

    • Rope
    • Sharp razor blade
    • Simple outdoor mat
    • Caulk gun
    • Heavy duty adhesive

    How to make it:

    1. Cut all your into equal-sized pieces using a sharp razor blade. Note: The pieces of rope should match the length of the mat, plus a few inches more at the ends.
    1. Spread the glue in rows and lay the rope on the glue, making sure the rope pieces are pushed close together. Note: You might have to wait for a while for the glue to dry, so try not to move the glued rope during that time or fix them by placing something heavy on top.
    1. Once the mat is fully covered with rope, unravel the coils at the end. Then, weave the threads around and through each open rope. Unravel and fray the end of each piece.

    • Rope (1/2’’)
    • Thin-gauge wire
    • Tape (Ultrasuede)
    • Glue
    • Two hooks

    How to make:

    1. Cut a piece of rope (make it a bit longer than the planned bar length).
    2. Make a loop at the end and fix it by wrapping with thin-gauge wire.
    3. Use Ultrasuede tape in a matching color to cover the wire, then fix the tape’s ends with glue.
    4. Screw the two hooks into the wall (spaced to match the length of the rope). Attach the loops to the hooks.

    Want another simple and affordable way to put your photos on display? This rope décor looks best with polaroid photos; however, if you don’t own a Polaroid camera, the same effect can be achieved by printing them on watercolor inkjet paper, then just trim the paper around the image to 4’’ x 5’’.

    • Rope
    • Wooden clothespins
    • Your fav printed photos
    • Washi tape (or drawing pins)

    How to make:

    1. Cut the rope to the right length, taking into consideration the space between each photo and some spare rope at each end for hanging.
    1. Attach the clothespins to the photos.
    1. Hang up the ropes and fix the end with washi tape. Note: Washi tape is great because it is easy to remove without leaving any stains on the walls. Alternatively, you can use drawing pins.
